AMERICAN BOBTAIL CAT

The American Bobtail cat is a very interesting and unique breed. This stocky, medium to large size feline has hind legs that are longer than its front legs and, as its name suggests, a very short “bob” tail. American Bobtails are very smart animals. They are friendly and easygoing around their people but tend to be shy around strangers. They need to be groomed often as their coats are medium to long and very shaggy.

It is believed that the first American Bobtail was born in the 1960s, though the true origin of the breed is sometimes disputed. According to the story, the parents of the first American Bobtail were the offspring of a Siamese female and a stray male tabby with a short, stubby tail. Some of the kittens were born with short tails and some with long tails. Later, one of the short tailed kittens mated with one of the long tailed kittens and their entire litter had the short tail that now distinguishes the American Bobtail breed, which was recognized officially in 1989.
