Buster's Home
by Maria Kuzmiak
Buster was born in a pet shop. There were other kittens to play with, but Buster wanted a real home.
A young man came to the pet shop. His name was Mike. He took Buster home to his apartment in the city. There was a long hallway for Buster to run in. Buster liked to sit in the apartment window. He could see the tall buildings and the lights at night. He could hear the busy sounds of the city every day.
After a time, Buster and Mike moved to a small house in the suburbs. Now Buster had stairs to climb. He sat in the window and saw cars driving by. He saw squirrels climbing the trees that lined the street. He saw children walking to the school bus in the mornings. He saw grownups coming home from work at night
A young woman came to live with them. The woman was Mike’s new wife.
One day, Mike’s wife said, “I’m tired of living in the suburbs. I want a quiet life in the country.” So they moved to a big house in the country. There were many rooms to explore in the big, new house. There was a fireplace to keep them warm. Now when Buster sat in the window, he saw rows of trees in the woods outside. He saw bunnies and chipmunks and deer in the woods. He watched the birds fly to their nests in the trees. It was peaceful and quiet in the country.
“You sure have lived in a lot of places,” Mike’s wife said to Buster. “I wonder where he likes it best,” she said to Mike.
“Buster liked the apartment in the city,” Mike said. Buster thought, “He is right.”
“But he liked the house in the suburbs, too,” Mike said.Again, Buster thought, “He is right.”
“I think he likes the peace and quiet of the country,” Mike’s wife said. She was right too.
Buster purred and curled up in front of the fire. He just liked to be home.
