Cat Acne

Cat acne is a common problem. While it is not serious, it can certainly be a nuisance to your pet. The good news, though, is that this problem is usually easy to treat.

Cats get acne when overactive oil glands produce pimples. The most common place where this happens is on the chin, but pimples can occur anywhere on the skin. It is most common during shedding season, and in some cats it reoccurs about the same time each year. When the animal’s body goes through the shedding process, it rids itself of waste through the pores along with old hair. Sometimes too much waste is secreted, causing clogged pores that become acne.

Acne is not always visible on cats since the pimples can develop under the animal’s fur. One way to find it is while you are brushing or petting your cat. If you notice red, swollen pores or black clogged pores, you may want to treat the area, especially if you notice that he is scratching himself more than usual. One way to do this is to wash the area with antibacterial soap or to treat it with antifungal ointment. If this is a chronic problem for your kitty, you can try giving him baths using a special shampoo that can help control cat acne. Diet may also play a role in the development of acne as it can be a symptom of a food allergy. Another factor related to eating is the type of food and water bowl the cat uses. Plastic tends to host bacteria much more easily than ceramic or metal, so plastic bowls may not be the best choice for cats that are prone to acne on the chin or around the mouth.
