Norwegian Forest Cat
Norwegian Forest cats are big kitties with a fluffy tails and lion-like ruffs around their necks. They are excellent, sure-footed climbers and among the only cats that can climb down a tree head first. They have large feet and long claws suitable to their superior hunting abilities. They have distinctive greenish-gold eyes and can have coats of almost any color. They are also loyal companions that are very affectionate and enjoy being with people. While they don’t mind being handled, these cats are usually not lap cats.
As the name suggests, Norwegian Forest Cats are originally thought to have appeared in Norway. Their woolly undercoats and water-repellent overcoats are adaptations that helped these cats survive in the cold climate of Norway. To this day, even domesticated Norwegian “house” cats usually love the outdoors.
The Norwegian Forest Cat has an interesting place in mythology as well.
The Nordic goddess Freya was said to have ridden a chariot of fire that was pulled by a pair of these cats. Nordic legend also held that farmers who put out milk for stray cats would have an abundant harvest. It was also believed that if a stray cat showed up at a wedding, it meant good fortune for the newlyweds. These cats were also considered to have the ability to scare trolls away as trolls were said to be quite afraid of cats!
